The phpList script

phpList is an open-source mailing list and newsletter manager. phpList is free to download, install and use, and is easy to integrate with any website. It works well when used for announcements, and can handle very large email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists, but will only receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing up, users can identify their geographical location, and messages can be targetted to these. You can add place holders in your email that will be replaced with personal details (such as the person's name). Users can update their own information, and unlike many other mailing list systems, they can change their email address. HTML emails are supported.

Why should you use the phpList script?

Here are just a few of the main advantages of using phpList:

• It uses "throttling" so that the emails are sent out in batches, and the server is not being overloaded - this is very important for large newsletter lists
• Gives you the flexibility of having more than one mailing list
• Personalized messages with customer name and any other info you want to display
• Easy management of any bouncebacks
• You can import your current subscriber list into phpList
• Easy integration of the phpList script into all kinds of websites

Some other useful functions of the phpList script:

• Multiple subscribe pages allow you to choose many different combinations of templates, languages, user attributes and lists.
• The user management tools are excellent to manage and maintain large databases of subscribers.
• Multiple list administrators. The super-admin can assign lists to list managers, who can manage their users and lists. The super-admin user can prepare messages that can be sent by the list managers to their lists.
• No duplicate messages. No forgotten messages. phpList manages message delivery with a message queue, ensuring that every subscriber gets the email message, and that no subscribers receive two copies, even if they're subscribed to more than one list.
• HTML email messages. Subscribers can be given the choice between text or HTML email messages. You decide whether subscribers can choose what the default choice is, and what format a message is sent in: text only, HTML only, or both.
• phpList keeps sending messages from your web server, even after you shut down your computer.
• 100 000 + subscribers. phpList is designed to manage mailing lists with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. phpList is excellent with smaller lists too.
• Attachments can be uploaded and included in messages for download.
• RSS feeds can be automatically sent to a mailing list weekly, daily, or monthly.

How to install the phpList script easily in three steps?

In order to install the phpList script for your site hosted in your account with us, use the Elefante Free Scripts menu located under the Web Tools section in your account's Control Panel:

Once you access the menu you will see a list of all the available scripts in the Elefante Installer. The phpList script could be found under the Ad Management part of the list:

A single click on the phpList script name will start the installation process. An extented script information window will open. In order to continue the installation, follow the „Install phpList“ link:

The next step of the installation wizard is the script settings configuration page. First of all, you will have to choose a database if you have created one already. If not, you can create it now via the „Create a new database“ link or via the MySQL Databases menu located in the Site Management section of your account's Control Panel. The plans that are allowed to create only one database will be automatically chosen for you.

The first field is „Database prefix“ – you will be able to specify the database table's prefix according to your preferences or to leave the default one. Please note that you will have to set a different database prefix in case you wish to install the script for a second time so that the tables of the two installations will not mess up. The second field is the „Domain“ field organized as a dropdown menu where you will be able to choose one of your available hosted domain or subdomain names. The third field is the „Path“ field. This is the field where you specify inside which domain or subdomain name folder the script files will be placed. If you choose to leave the default folder, the script will be installed in a subfolder of your domain name folder as shown in the example below. In case you wish the script to be available in your domain name folder itself, you will need to leave only the „/“ (forward slash) symbol in the field.

The next four fields are your administrator user details that you wish to set for the script so that you will be able to manage it.

Once you are ready with the configuration, you will have to follow the „Install“ button at the bottom of the window and to allow some time for the script to be installed:

After a few seconds the script will be installed and you will see a page where all the installed applications will be listed for you. The new Application URL will be available as well as the Admin URL where you will be able to check the administration details that you have previously set and to log in to the script administration section:

By clicking on the Admin URL you will see a window with the script administration information needed for script management purposes:
